Could you imagine living in a place where any little word, any little ill-percieved action could get you thrown in a cell? Executed, even? That's the kind of place Becca lives in, although the brutal truths have been hidden from her under the protection and respect of her mother, a women who takes the lead in the interrogation and torture of "dissidents."

When her best friend, Heather, is taken in due to the actions of her parents, Becca's perspective towards the world they live in begin to change. She begins to ask questions that verge on dangerous, and Heather becomes a total stranger, leaving Becca to wonder if there is anyone left she can trust. 

Becca faces some tough decisions, forced to choose between her beliefs and the love she's alway had for her family. 

I will not be someone who abandons my principles as soon as they become inconvenient. I will not be someone who says that certain things have to be done... as long as somebody else does them.

Becca is the focus here, and I really loved the way we saw her change, grow, and morph into ideas she didn't even know she could possess. Getting to know her and connecting to her was effortless. The side characters, such as Heather and Jake, were a little more difficult to relate to. I wish I had known Heather before the incident that took away her parents, because I had a hard time believing Becca when she gave us some insight into who Heather used to be. And Jake... well, I felt bad for the guy, but other than that, I wasn't too worried or concerned about him.

I did feel enveloped in the world that Cannon created, but what caused all this authoritarianism? Maybe I'm just a reader who likes to know everything, but I caught myself wondering how the "oppressive regime" came to be. Other than that, Cannon is very descriptive of the world she's built, drawing us into it and making us see it for what it is.

I really enjoyed Zoe Cannon's dystopian story. The writing style was fluid and easy to follow and the situations that the author sets up for her characters are believable, creating genuine conflict and emotions.

We were on the run from an alien enemy intent on taking Erynn away from me—from us—leaving my main concern her safety. I took my duty regarding Erynn’s protection personally. She, in turn, made this task . . . difficult, the definition of difficult here being an understatement. I resisted my reckless emotions, sure that Erynn could never love someone like me, nor should she. Poor judgments from my past have left me less than untainted.

But one night something happened. The barriers Erynn and I had built between us crumbled. My heart took control, leading my actions. Our souls met, our lips touched, and I knew my life would never be the same.

Now we only had to survive a war against a technically advanced alien enemy with unlimited resources and absolutely no principles.

I knew I loved J.A. Redmerski when she came out with The Mayfair Moon, but wow did she blow my mind with The Edge of Never. 

Camryn's life isn't exactly in shambles ~ because she doesn't let it fall apart ~ but the pain of what she's been through is enough to knock anyone flat on their ass. Instead of letting the hurt consume her, Camryn shuts it off, not allowing herself to feel anything except the oppressing lack of living, a trap that she's allowed herself to fall in to. 

Pain hurts, but pain that's so powerful that you can't feel anything anymore, that's when you start to feel like you're going crazy.

She's had this dream to travel, to see the world, but after everything, it feels impossible to even know where to start. Until one night, Camryn, in her long streak of bad luck, gets pushed over the edge.

That was when I realized that everything I did from that point on produced the same results: This is your life, Camryn Bennet. This is your life.

She jumps ship, pushing everything conventional to where it belongs: far away from anywhere she is. The bus station is her savior, and the next step to that life she thought she could never reach.

Andrew Parrish. Mm. Mm. Mm. He's got a dirty mouth and a special way of looking at the world. As much as she'd like to admit otherwise, Camryn is drawn to him, to his green eyes and pretty smile, to his spontaneity and mischievous ways.

I can't even believe I let myself get comfortable with him and as a result I'm no longer able to make fear my bitch.

He brings her out of herself, and for the first time, Camryn can see who she truly is.

This book is incredibly beautiful. It makes you want to live life, every moment, to the fullest. What I loved most was the truth of it, how real everything was. You know when you're watching a movie, and people wake up in the morning and immediately kiss like there's no such thing as morning breath? Or how the girl always wakes up with perfectly applied makeup and silky smooth hair? Psh. Not in this book. It is so refreshing to witness all the imperfections and the little embarrassing moments that make us all human. Redmerski builds real characters with traits that we can all relate to and that make the emotions we feel with the characters all the more beautiful.

Camryn and Andrew's relationship is unique. They surprise themselves, bringing out the best in each other and making each other face those things that pushed them to run in the first place. And Andrew... He broke my heart, made me cry, and had me praying that the little secret he'd been hiding never reached its full potential. That little tidbit made me feel like I'd been thrown against a wall, disorienting me to the point that I couldn't (or didn't want to) see or think straight.

Love, love, love the writing style. Redmerski creates hilarious and blunt dialogue between the two main characters, and the two voices of Camryn and Andrew are superbly written. I'm a huge fan of dual point-of-view, especially when the author can create two distinctly different voices, something I'm sure is extremely difficult, but Redmerski pulls it off with ease. And the story itself just flows, moving and gaining momentum that covers all the bases and leaves nothing to be desired.

The Edge of Never is real, raw, and genuine to the core. The journey that Redmerski leads you through is the reason why we all love reading in the first place. She makes us feel, effortlessly allows us to fall in love, pushes us over the edge until we cry, and gets us laughing out loud.

My absolute favorite book of this year. Highly, highly, highly recommend.

Andrew Parrish. Holy wow. He's one of those characters that you wish, with all your might, truly existed. He's carefree, spontaneous, hilarious, and unpredictable.

"Live in the moment," he says as if making a serious point, "where everything is just right, take your time and limit your bad memories and you'll get wherever it is you're going a lot faster and with less bumps in the road along the way."

He's romantic, in his own way, and he sees things in the simplest and purest of ways, luring Camryn out of the hole she's hidden herself in.

"I don't think you ever really fall out of love with someone," I say and see a flicker of thought move through her eyes. "I think when you fall in love, like true love, it's love for life. All the rest is just experience and delusions."

But for all his laughs and mischievous grins, Andrew has this other, darker side to him that's just as afraid as Camryn.

"It's better to shun emotion than to fall for it and let it make you its bitch - and since nothing lasts forever, in the end everything that was once good, always hurts like hell."

What's happened to him to make him think as such? Camryn's told him her reasons, but she comes to realize that Andrew can be more closed off than she ever was.

Tuesday Prelude

I'm ashamed to say it's been a long while since I've hung out with Nora Roberts, and I'm not sure why I've allowed her to collect dust in my reading collection. I've taken a dive back into the old days, reading her novels again, and I'm so glad we have been reunited.

The Search is about Fiona, a strong heroine who trains dogs and is overcoming a horrific experience that she encountered in her early twenties. Although I admire and like her, she's not the one I want to introduce you to today.

Simon Doyle. Heck yes. Moody. Artistic. Generous. Rude (a weirdly attractive attribute for Simon). Sexy. Independent. There's nothing not appealing about Simon Doyle.

He's not really a fan of people...

If people let other people alone, people would be better off. It's always people that screw things up for people anyway.

But Fiona is growing on him.... in an irritating and annoyingly subtle way...

“What is it about you?” he repeated. “How does touching you calm me down and excite me at the same time? What is it you want from me? You never ask. Sometimes I wonder, is this a trick?”

He's smart, brave, and has quite the temper, but he's there for Fiona and, although he'd never admit it, has a big, throbbing heart that cares too much.

The Boys of Summer is one of those books in which all my expectations were thrown back in my face. I had predictions, based on stereotypes, about this book, and I was very (pleasantly) surprised that it was not at all what I thought it would be.

Tess is gearing up for a summer of waitressing, dirty dishes, ruined manicures, and time with her two best friends. She's had a rough go of things at school, and she's just ready to leave that world behind her and pretend it doesn't exist. It's summertime and, although she doesn't know it yet, anything can happen. 

"The Onslow Boys" are that group of guys. You know which ones I'm talking about. That group of boys that is always out for a good time, creates a roomful of contagious and captivating male laughter, and consistently catches the eye of every female in a ten mile radius. Yeah, they're those guys, and I love them for it. (Sean, especially... *wink*)

When Tess meets "The Onslow Boys," she's surprised by who she is when she's with them. They bring out her confidence at the same time as they (or Toby in particular) make her nervous and self-concious. It's an interesting mix as Tess edges along the border of new boundaries she's yet to ever cross. 

What I love most about Tess are her flaws and how she overcomes them. She's not a perfect character; she can be very insecure and unsure of herself. I can relate to her so completely, especially when I think of myself at that age, as I think many young women will. Tess makes some pretty big mistakes due to her insecurities, actions that took me by surprise, but she owns up to them, growing from an awkwardly shy teenager into a woman who's gained realization, confidence, and learned some truths about herself.

Honestly, I thought The Boys of Summer would be one of those quick, fun, easy reads. While it is all of those things, it's also so much more. C.J. Duggan builds a perfect summer escape, drama and all, that makes you want to stretch out in the sun and stay a while. Her characters are genuine, flawed, and distinct, and the story she creates around them is a bit nerve-wracking and a lot hopeful. It'll give you the warm and fuzzies, get you laughing out loud, make you pull your hair in frustration, and have you holding your breath, hoping for that sigh of relief. 

Highly recommend :)
